Midwives are in demand. You should call about midwifery care – you do not need a referral from your doctor. Call as soon as you know you are pregnant.
Some clinics may have openings for clients later in their pregnancies. You may call to ask about an appointment at any time in your pregnancy.
If there are several clinics in your area, call them all to ask about availability.
Because of the large demand for midwifery care, your clinic may be full for your expected date of birth. The clinic may ask you to join a waiting list and may call you later in your pregnancy if a spot becomes available. However, you should seek care from another provider such as your family doctor or an obstetrician in the meantime.
A midwifery care “waiting list” does not guarantee you a spot later in your pregnancy. Unfortunately, some women will not be able to secure a midwife for their care.
Availability varies from city to city and clinic to clinic. Be persistent in seeking care.
You can find your local clinic(s) online.
