COLLINGWOOD GENERAL AND MARINE HOSPITAL

This award was developed to recognize Ontario hospitals that have demonstrated excellence in successfully integrating midwives into their organization. This year’s winner scored highly on the criteria set for this award, which were based on the Ontario Hospital Association’s Resource Manual for Sustaining Quality Midwifery Services in Hospitals.

The Award Task Force was impressed with the nomination for Collingwood General and Marine Hospital for many reasons.  Midwives at this hospital are valued members of the interdisciplinary team and growth of midwifery services has always been supported by the hospital and by other practitioners – the hospital has never placed a cap on midwifery numbers in the community or in the hospital.

All disciplines at the hospital are excited that Midwives at CGMH are now providing full-scope epidurals!

Midwives routinely and actively participate in policy development and revision, and have a voice on all of the relevant obstetrical committees. The hospital has a Head Midwife who is a respected member of the Maternal-Child team, and whose opinion and input is consistently solicited.

The Head Midwife experienced first-hand how fantastic the team was when she recently was an obstetrical patient herself, and the operating room nurse asked her if she wanted to do anything special with her placenta!

One example of their interdisciplinary teamwork was at a recent precipitous birth of a 27-week baby.  While waiting for the Sick Kids team to arrive, a GP managed the team, with an RT maintaining the airway, the midwife placing the UVC line, while anaesthesia attempted a peripheral line.  This was only possible because of the lengths this hospital goes to work together, learn together and play together.
