Roadmap to Health System Integration: A critical direction for midwifery sustainability in Ontario is here!

May 28, 2025

The AOM is proud to launch the Midwifery Sustainability Project (MSP) advocacy report, Roadmap to Health System Integration: A critical direction for midwifery sustainability in Ontario. The report makes recommendations to remove systemic barriers while leveraging the expertise of midwives as primary health-care providers and the integration midwifery into the larger health system. The implementation of these recommendations will lead to improved retention and work satisfaction for midwives, resulting in healthier communities with greater access to primary care.

The MSP was set in motion in the fall of 2022 with direction from membership to prioritize the goal of fostering sustainable midwifery practice as a key objective of the 2022-2025 strategic plan. The goals of the MSP are to increase the health and well-being of midwives, to promote the sustainability of the profession, and to expand the expertise and quality perinatal, sexual, reproductive and newborn care midwives bring to their communities and the Ontario health-care system. The MSP followed a multi-pronged consultation “roadmap,” guided by the MSP Steering Committee (MSP-SC) and was informed by midwives, researchers and clients, to understand systemic factors related to the current burnout and attrition crisis in midwifery.

Now is the time to call for systemic changes to promote sustainability through improved health system integration. The Roadmap to Health System Integration: A critical direction for midwifery sustainability in Ontario will guide our path moving forward, together.
