What is Insured

Midwives’ professional liability insurance policy provides coverage for the provision of clinical care that is within the scope of midwifery (as defined by the College of Midwives of Ontario (CMO)) or related to midwifery but within the public realm. It does not provide coverage for claims related to the general running of a practice (e.g., slip and fall injuries), which are instead covered through practice’s clinic insurance.

This means that the policy provides coverage for the provision of prenatal classes, courtesy catches of obstetrical patients, or for the provision of episodic care at an uninsured clinic so long as they are acceptable by the CMO.

In relation to all of these different kinds of activities and assuming that none of the exclusions apply (e.g., criminal activity), the policy provides coverage for:

·              HIV positive or an AIDS diagnosis financial assistance

·              Claims of negligence (or professional liability) brought through the courts;

·              Defense costs for college complaints and investigations;

·              Coroner inquiries; and

·              Under some circumstances, HIROC support may also be available for denials or termination of hospital privileges, privacy breaches, or public health inspections. Contact AOM On Call for further information.
